Small business
owners in Madison County agree, the best part about owning a
business in Madison County is that you are able to select from
a diverse and hardworking workforce. Many of Madison
County's residents are underemployed-- people who live
in Western North Carolina because of its calmer pace but
who have been unable to secure a position that meets their
qualifications. Over 5,050 of our residents commute
out of the county to work. Although the unemployment
rate is relatively low, there are many skilled tradespeople
who contract for themselves and are available to perform a
wide array of jobs.
As of 2007, the population of Madison County is approximately 20,500, with 8,800
households, and about 6,700 families residing in the county. The
population density is 17/km2 (44/mi2).
There are 9,722 housing units at an average density of 8
persons/km2 (22 persons/mi2). The racial
makeup of the county is 97.63% White, 0.83% African
American, 0.27% Native
American, 0.23% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and
0.59% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are
Hispanic or Latino of any race.In the county the population is spread out with 24% under the age of 19, 11.1% from 20 to 29, 12.6% from 30 to 39, 14.4% from 40 to 49, 15% from 50 to 59 and 22.8% who are 60 years of age or older. The median age is 42.

Madison County currently has partnerships with both AB-Tech and Mars Hill College. We are working toward tailoring programs to fit the needs of today’s workforce. Training and knowledge are the keys to a reliable and profitable business. We hope to expand this in the future to create a vast opportunity for training and education. |
